A baby shakes almost every couple: in a University of Washington study, 67% of mothers saw their marital satisfaction drop after the birth, compared with 49% of women without children (Shapiro, Gottman & Carrère, 2000).
What protects a couple? Not a weekend in Paris. The study’s author draws three habits from it: affection every day, interest in what the other is going through, and problems tackled together. Gestures that fit in a few minutes.
The Gottman Institute, which specializes in couples, also bets on small rituals rather than big occasions: a few words before parting in the morning, a real kiss when you meet again, a few minutes to say thank you. Ten minutes a day is a realistic way to start.
You don’t find time, you take it. A few principles that hold even when the days overflow:
By going for little and often rather than a lot and rarely. Hook a few minutes onto a moment that already exists, like the baby’s nap or the evening after bedtime. Share the tasks so each of you can catch your breath, and accept help from family and friends for a real evening out now and then.
It isn’t a magic formula, but it’s a realistic start. What matters is regularity and the quality of attention: ten minutes without screens or logistics feed the bond more than an evening spent each on your own phone.
Quiet things: a cup for two without screens, a shoulder rub, a ten-line letter, questions to ask each other, one episode under the same blanket. Turn on the “Kids asleep” filter to see only quiet ideas.
Plenty: a real six-second kiss, the three good things of the day, a specific thank-you, a twenty-second hug, or each other’s inner weather report. Pick “5 min” in the tool to draw an idea that fits.
Pick a five-minute idea you can even do lying down: a twenty-second hug, the inner weather report, the three good things of the day. Some evenings, going to bed early together is a couple moment too.
When you can, yes: a real evening out now and then does a couple good. But you don’t have to wait for it to find each other: small everyday rituals keep the bond alive between two evenings out.
